Description
This shark ring is made from Silver and its design is inspired by the magnificent Whale Shark.
The endangered Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish on Earth and reaches more than 15m in length. It is a filter feeder and belongs to the carpet sharks, which are characterized by relatively small mouths equipped with tiny teeth and filter pads that are used to separate food from the water.
Juvenile Whale Sharks are known to eat more than 20kg of plankton, composed of copepods, krill, fish eggs, and larvae. The reproductive phase of Whale Sharks is barely known, with virtually no information on the location of their birth sites.
Pregnant females can have up to 300 pups that are born alive at a size of 40 to 60cm. Whale sharks are continuously threatened by the international, now illegal trade of their fins, and despite a worldwide increase of awareness to protect them, population recovery is slow as they are estimated to mature not earlier than 30 years of age.
In Punta Descartes, Whale sharks, often larger juveniles, are observed during the warmer months between March and September.
With the purchase of this whale shark ring, you can choose to support any of Equipo Tora Carey’s conservation projects, and as we grow, hopefully, the introduction of new projects on other key species, including sharks. Also, if you ever want to visit the site and learn more about the projects, make sure to contact us or Equipo Tora Carey and schedule your visit!
