Description
For World Oceans Day 2021, we collaborated with NOMELLAMO to bring to you this beautiful plush of a Mobula munkiana ray.
Did you know that rays are one of the most threatened marine species in the world?
These beautiful creatures have been exploited for many decades for their cartridges which can reach enormous prices in the Asian markets where they are thought of as having medicinal properties.
Luckily, Costa Rica protects this species that inhabits the Pacific Ocean. Recently, it was discovered that not only the adults migrate through our waters, but that there are some bays in the North Pacific where the females hatch their babies. These babies need the protection of calm bays like the ones in El Jobo and Playa Rajada.
The NGO
Equipo Tora Carey studies these rays from June to September when the babies are reaching the shores to filter microorganisms. This NGO collects important data to help the government protect these ecosystems and hire only local community members to create a wider understanding in the surrounding communities and a sense of pride about what it means to live next to these charismatic rays.
With the purchase of this Mobula ray plush, you help keep the salaries of the local community members that help monitor these organisms and directly support the long-term conservation to make sure that at least in El Jobo, these species will continue to be protected forever!
Let’s all help protect the Mobula ray (Mobula munkiana)!
Note: Colors/fabric design of the plush might change.
