Description
This fish school ring is made of silver and is adjustable to any size! Just be careful not to open it too much as silver is malleable only until a certain point!
Several species of fish tend to swim in schools, which serves them both as protection from predators and to improve their swimming, since, just like cyclists and birds, by swimming all on the same direction, the ones on the back feel less the counter-force produced by the water flow, and once tired, can shift with others, optimizing their energy expenses. Besides these, being in a group, it also helps them forage more easily.
Now you might be wondering, how do they coordinate so well to swim synchronized? Well, they have evolved to have movement, vibration, and pressure gradient sensors in their bodies, which allows them to ‘predict’ the movements of the leading organisms. You can actually see those sensors if you watch really closely! It is a line, called the lateral line, which goes across all their body on a lateral position (duh)!
Several fish species are being threatend towards extinction either because of their value on our food industry, so they are being overfished, or because their predators or food source is being overfished. That said, we have to start being careful about what we eat, do more research about the fish species we consume and their ecosystemic role.
By purchasing this fish school ring, you can choose to support any of Equipo Tora Carey’s conservation projects, and as we grow, hopefully, the introduction of new projects on other key species, including various fish species. Also, if you ever want to visit the site and learn more about the projects, make sure to contact us or Equipo Tora Carey and schedule your visit!
