Silver Turtle Ring

Description

This turtle ring is made of 925 Sterling Silver and resembles a tiny turtle hatchling on its first journey to the ocean.

Turtle hatchlings appear fragile and weak, but are actually super strong! Once they hatch out of their eggshells at 40 – 50cm depth of almost two months compacted sand, they emit noises to wake up their siblings and stimulate their hatching.

Hatchlings open their eggshells from the inside with a small, temporary tooth on their snout, which falls off shortly afterward. Slowly, their still from the egg form rounded carapace straightens, and once most of the hatchlings are out of their shells, they all start moving their forth and hind flippers to move sand layer after sand layer towards the bottom of the nest.

Because their mother forms a boot-like nest chamber, their way to the surface is not a straight line to the surface, but at an angle already directed towards the ocean. It requires strong team-work and can take 5 days to complete, during which they don’t breathe, but absorb the rest of their yolk sack attached by an umbilical to their abdomen.

Once at the surface, hatchlings orientate themselves by the slope of the beach, and the sound and spray of the breaking waves. This is when their final run begins, pumping enough blood into their flippers and strengthening their muscles to be able to swim and reach a current that takes them far away from the predators at the coast.
